Skyler is a boxer puppy that was diagnosed with Histiocytic
Sarcoma back in April of 2010. He had his right rear leg amputated at AETC and underwent chemotherapy as well. We are very pleased to report that Skyler is doing well today. He graces the cover of Tails Magazine (May 2011) issue which was voted on by magazine viewers.

Below is the article written by a Tails Magazine writer.

Skyler “Skybox” the Boxer entered Doug Stull’s life when the tiny dog was only ten weeks old. It has been a story of friendship and love ever since. The pair spends as much time outdoors as they can, even during long Chicago winters. According to Stull, “Skyler’s main goal in life is to get attention from people and make them smile, as he smiles back!”

And while Skyler loves common “doggie” activities such as playing on the beach, chasing balls and squirrels, and running, Stull also let us know that Skyler has a bit of an obsession with blonde women. He likes brunettes, but if there is blonde nearby he will do everything he can to get her attention and to make his way over to say, “hi.” One thing Skyler is not is shy.

Skyler is, however, very brave. Last April, just months before his ninth birthday, Skyler was at Urban Veterinary Care when Dr. Scott noticed a lump on his leg. It turned out to be cancer, and shortly after the diagnosis, Skyler had his leg amputated. He was a champ during the surgery and chemo, and in fact, the winning photo was taken this past July, just months after surgery. He adjusted to his new way of getting around with ease; Nothing can keep Skyler from making new friends and staying active.

Now that the weather is getting warmer, be sure to keep your eye out for this happy and social three-legged dog, especially if you’re a blonde woman! If you don’t see Sklyer at the beach, you may catch him in one of his other favorite spots, riding around town in the back of the Jeep, top down, of course!

I just wanted to take a moment to say THANK YOU to Dr. Derse and Dr. Toro as well as everyone that assisted in the care of my German Shepherd, Harley. I brought Harley in on the evening of December 4, 2010. She had kennel cough but it seemed to be progressing and she was very sick. Dr. Derse was fantastic and reassured me that they would do everything they could to help my sweet girl. X-rays showed that Harley had pneumonia and the best treatment would be for her to stay at AETC. While it broke my heart to leave her there I knew that she was going to get the best treatment possible. I could not have been more impressed with AETC! When I would call I was always able to speak with either the doctor or nurse who was caring for Harley. On the morning of December 5, I spoke with Dr. Toro and he explained that she still had a fever and may need to stay an additional night to ensure that the fever broke. I called again later in the evening and Dr. Toro told me that her fever had broken and that she was eating pretty well. He also told me that if I could keep a close eye on her for the next 24 hours that she could come home. I got in the car and went to get her immediately. I was provided with a breakdown of all of the treatments Harley had required, the doctors notes and a copy of her x-rays. Last evening (December 8th) I received a call from Dr. Derse to see how Harley was doing. The service was phenomenal and I am so grateful for the care and compassion that everyone at AETC provided. I am happy to report that Harley is doing very well. This morning she even went outside and barked at the neighbor dogs which she hasn’t done in well over a week!

Again, THANK YOU for being so great and helping bring Harley back to health!

Assisting in the exams were members of Animal Emergency & Treatment Centers (AETC) of Chicago and Grayslake. AETC operates two 24-hour emergency, critical care and specialty referral hospitals in both Chicago (on Belmont and Pulaski) and in Grayslake. On this day, however, the services of Dr. Justin Allen, a Board-Certified Cardiologist at AETC was needed to perform cardiovascular examinations on Binti Jua and her son, Bakari, two of the zoo’s seven gorillas. “We are proud of the work that Dr. Allen does at AETC everyday, and even more proud when he can lend a hand to help the Brookfield Zoo Medial Team” said Dr. Anthony Coronado, AETC’s Medical Director. Binti Jua may be rememberd when she made international headlines in 1996 after a 3-year-old boy fell into the gorilla enclosure. Binti Jua gently scooped the child up and cradled him in her arms until zoo staff members recovered the child. Both gorillas made it through their exams and are doing fine today.
